Ferry Hirtshals - Bergen at a glance

Everything about the overnight Hirtshals - Bergen crossing with Fjord Line - getting to the terminal, check-in times, facilities on board, vehicle and pet rules, and onward travel from Bergen. If you are planning the route as a round trip with two nights on board, see the mini cruise guide for details.

Getting to the Hirtshals terminal

The Fjord Line ferry departs from Nordsøterminalen; set your sat nav to Containerkajen 4, 9850 Hirtshals. By car, follow the E39 to Hirtshals and then the Fjord Line signage from there. Parking directly at the terminal is limited, but paid parking is available in town, for example at Hotel Skagas. The harbour also has six electric vehicle charging points (Clever).

If you are travelling as a foot passenger without a car, Hirtshals is reachable by train and bus (check connections via rejseplanen.dk); the nearest railway station is Lilleheden.

Check-in and departure

Arrive at the terminal at least 60 minutes before departure; boarding closes about 30 minutes before sailing. With a vehicle you drive to the check-in lane, while foot passengers check in at the terminal building. Departure from Hirtshals is usually around 19:15, so you travel overnight.

Carry a valid passport (an EU national identity card also works, if you have one) - this is an international crossing between Denmark and Norway.

On board

The route is served by the two cruise ferries MS Stavangerfjord and MS Bergensfjord, both powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). For the overnight crossing it is worth booking a cabin: there are around 20 categories, from an airline-style seat through inside and outside cabins to a suite. On board you can eat at the Commander Buffet, the Grieg restaurant and the Oasis Garden Cafe, have a drink at bars such as the Seaview Bar, browse the tax-free shop, and enjoy live music and activities for children.

Payment on board is cashless by card; notes in Norwegian and Danish kroner as well as euros are also accepted (coins only in Danish currency). So you do not need Norwegian currency or cash for the crossing - a cash machine is available near reception.

Vehicles, bikes and pets

Cars, motorcycles, motorhomes and caravans travel with you to Bergen; the ferries carry up to 600 vehicles. Enter the full dimensions at booking, including add-ons such as a roof box or bike rack, so the correct fare is calculated. Details on travelling with a camper are in the motorhome guide.

Pets are welcome: on the overnight crossing, both ships offer dedicated pet cabins, which you book by phone well in advance due to limited availability; alternatively your dog can travel in a kennel on deck or in your vehicle. What Norway requires on entry is summarised in the pets guide.

Arrival in Bergen and onward travel

After the stop in Stavanger at around 07:00 comes the highlight of the route: the coastal passage through the skerries of western Norway. You reach Bergen at around 13:00.

The ferry docks centrally at Jekteviksterminalen, Nøstegaten 30, from where Bryggen and the Fløibanen funicular are within walking distance.

Without a car, change to city transport at the nearby Olav Kyrres gate stop; from Bergen station, the Bergen Line (Bergensbanen) continues towards Oslo.

Tickets and fares

Fjord Line offers the crossing in several fare types: the cheaper Cruise and Economy tickets are non-refundable and can only be changed for a fee, while the Flex fare allows free rebooking and a full refund up to departure. Whatever the fare, you can cancel a booking made more than 48 hours in advance free of charge within 24 hours of purchase; optional illness cancellation cover can also be added.

Free membership of the Fjord Club earns bonus points when you book direct. The earlier you book, the cheaper the fare tends to be; the booking window shows the exact price for your travel date.
