Overnight ferry to Oslo

An overnight crossing to Oslo with Go Nordic Cruiseline

The Copenhagen - Oslo route is the classic overnight ferry between two Scandinavian capitals. Go Nordic Cruiseline, owned since November 2024 by the Swedish shipping company Gotlandsbolaget, departs daily at 4:30 pm and reaches its destination the next morning at around 10:00 am – a calm crossing over the Kattegat and Skagerrak into the Oslofjord. The cruise ferries Nordic Crown and Nordic Pearl, renovated in spring 2025, operate the route with several restaurants, bars, a tax-free shop and an evening programme.

The terminal in Copenhagen sits on Dampfærgevej in the Nordhavn district, while in Oslo the ferry docks at Vippetangen on the edge of the city centre, about a 15-minute walk from the central station. If you only want a short trip to Oslo, you can book the crossing as a mini cruise with a shore excursion and return sailing.

Route guide

Copenhagen - Oslo ferry at a glance

Everything about the Copenhagen - Oslo overnight ferry with Go Nordic Cruiseline: getting to the terminals, check-in times, what's on board, vehicle and pet rules, and onward travel from Oslo.

Many travellers take the route as a classic mini cruise: overnight there, a good six hours ashore in Oslo, and back on the second night. Our guide Mini cruise to Oslo explains how the short-trip package works.

Getting to the Copenhagen terminal

The ferry departs from the terminal at Dampfærgevej 30 in the Nordhavn district (2100 Copenhagen Ø); enter this address into your sat nav. If you're travelling without a car, the operator's own shuttle bus runs from the terminal to Nørreport station and Copenhagen Central Station (København H) and back – book the shuttle ticket with your crossing or pick it up at reception. The terminal has a limited number of paid parking spaces; given the tight capacity, it's best to reserve in advance by phone or chat.

Check-in and departure

The ferry departs daily at 4:30 pm, at the same time in both directions. Check-in closes 15 minutes before departure, so by 4:15 pm at the latest; vehicles begin boarding from around 3:15 pm. If you're travelling by car, arrive at the terminal early anyway so boarding goes smoothly. At the counter you'll need a valid physical ID document: travellers from within the Schengen area can use a national ID card or passport, while citizens of Nordic countries can also show a physical driving licence. Digital IDs or driving licences are not accepted.

On board

The cruise ferries Nordic Crown and Nordic Pearl operate the route, with cabins renovated in spring 2025 ranging from a simple standard cabin with a sea view up to Commodore Class. On board you'll find several restaurants from buffet to à la carte dining, bars and a wine bar, the "Go Shop" tax-free shop, and an evening programme with live music, bingo and a nightclub; there's also a Kids Club with a pool for children.

Payment on board is by card or cash: prices are listed in Danish kroner, and you can pay in DKK, NOK, SEK, EUR and GBP as well as with the usual debit and credit cards. Wi-Fi is included in Commodore cabins; in the standard cabin you add a Wi-Fi package through Telenor Maritime, valid for one device.

Vehicles, bikes and pets

Cars, motorcycles, motorhomes and caravans travel on the large vehicle decks; enter your vehicle's dimensions correctly when booking, as the fare is based on them. Find more details on the camper package in our motorhome guide. Bicycles are carried for a small surcharge. Since the vehicle deck stays closed during the crossing, bring everything you need up to your cabin beforehand.

Dogs and cats are welcome on board: you book a pet cabin (maximum two animals) and register your pet at the time of booking for a fee. The animal stays in the cabin during the crossing, with a small exercise area on deck for fresh air. Our guide Travelling to Norway with a dog sums up what Norway requires on entry with a pet.

Arriving in Oslo and onward travel

In Oslo, the ferry docks at the terminal at Akershusstranda 31 on the Vippetangen peninsula, right on the edge of the city centre. Oslo Central Station (Oslo S), where most trains and buses depart, is about a 15 to 20-minute walk away. From there you can easily walk to the Opera House, Karl Johans Gate and the Aker Brygge district, or continue by train into the fjord region or towards Bergen. The terminal has a car park run by APCOA for both short and long-term parking, payable at the machine or via app.

Tickets and fares

Prices are dynamic and depend on season, demand and how early you book; the current price for your travel date is shown in the booking window. Go Nordic Cruiseline doesn't publish fixed fare names – booking early generally gets you a better price. If you cancel your booking, a cancellation fee applies as a percentage of the booking price; changing your travel date afterwards isn't possible. Bookings currently still run through the DFDS system, until Go Nordic has fully set up its own booking portal.
