Ferry Hirtshals - Larvik at a Glance

Everything about the Hirtshals - Larvik route with Color Line: getting to the terminal, check-in times, on-board facilities on the SuperSpeed 2, vehicle and pet rules, and onward travel from Larvik.

Getting to the Hirtshals Terminal

The ferry departs from the Color Line terminal in Hirtshals; set your sat nav to Norgeskajen 2, 9850 Hirtshals, Denmark. By car, follow the E39 towards Hjørring/Hirtshals right up to the check-in area at the port - the drive is straightforward whether you are coming from Germany, the Netherlands or elsewhere on the continent, via the Jutland motorway network. Parking is available in the public spaces around the port area as well as a limited number of spots right by the terminal; the car parks are managed by Aimo Park and payment is cashless, via the EasyPark app or a ticket machine. Foot passengers also check in at the terminal building.

Check-in and Departure

Check-in opens two hours before departure and closes 15 minutes beforehand; Color Line asks all passengers to be at the terminal at least 60 minutes before departure. Sister ships SuperSpeed 1 and SuperSpeed 2 operate the route, with up to two departures a day - usually around 12:45 and 22:15 from Hirtshals, and around 08:00 and 17:30 from Larvik, depending on the day of the week and season. Norway carries out border checks, so bring a valid passport or national ID card. The minimum age for travelling unaccompanied is 16.

On Board

The SuperSpeed 2 is a day ferry only, with no cabins. Instead of a cabin, you reserve a seat: from the central Centrum Lounge near reception and the tax-free shop, to Voyager Class on Deck 9 with reclining seats, to Business Class on Deck 8, a quiet zone with WiFi included. Families have their own lounge with a play area. Food is served in the buffet restaurant and a bistro, alongside the tax-free shop. WiFi is available throughout the ship; it is included in Business Class, otherwise you can buy access at reception. Payment on board is cashless by card, and euros, Danish kroner and Norwegian kroner are all accepted.

Vehicles, Bikes and Pets

Cars, motorhomes, caravans and motorcycles travel with you easily - the SuperSpeed 2 has 764 vehicle spaces. Cars are limited to a maximum length of 5 metres and a height of 1.95 metres, motorhomes to 5 metres in length and 2.55 metres in height; longer or taller vehicles can be booked for an extra fee. Measure your vehicle precisely before booking, including any bike rack or tow bar - details on travelling with a motorhome are in our guide to motorhomes. Pets are welcome on board with advance registration: dogs and cats stay in the vehicle or in the kennels on the car deck. You may walk your dog once during the crossing, accompanied by a crew member; entry rules are summarised in our guide to dogs and pets.

Arrival in Larvik and Onward Travel

The ferry docks at Terminal Revet 8 in Larvik, around 2.5 kilometres from the railway and bus station. Larvik is the gateway to the Telemark holiday region and sits right on the E18: Oslo and southern Norway are easy to reach, and onward rail travel follows the Vestfold Line towards the capital.

Tickets and Fares

Color Line offers the crossing in two fare types: the low-cost Economy ticket, which is non-refundable if cancelled and can only be rebooked for a change fee, and the flexible FLEX fare, which lets you rebook free of charge up to departure and refunds the full price if you cancel before departure. Motorists can choose the car saver fare, and campers the motorhome saver fare. Book the return journey together with the outbound leg and you save 10 percent on the return fare. Booking early gets you the best price; the booking window shows current prices for your travel date, with an overview on the price page.
