Taking a Motorhome on the Ferry

Taking a Motorhome on the Ferry

All ferries to Norway are car ferries and take motorhomes, caravans and car-and-trailer combinations. Which route suits you best depends on whether you'd rather cut down the long drive through Denmark or prefer a short crossing.

Direct from Germany

The overnight ferry Kiel to Oslo, run by Color Line, is the only direct connection from Germany. The ships Color Fantasy and Color Magic carry up to 750 vehicles, and a cabin is included for the overnight crossing. Book the outbound and return journey together and you get at least a ten percent discount on the vehicle ticket for the return leg.

Via Denmark from Hirtshals

From the Danish port of Hirtshals, crossings are shorter. The day ferry Hirtshals to Larvik, run by Color Line's SuperSpeed 2, gets you to southern Norway in just under four hours, while Hirtshals to Kristiansand runs several times a day with both Color Line and Fjord Line. For the west coast, the overnight ferry Hirtshals to Bergen, run by Fjord Line, takes you straight to the fjord coast.

Getting Your Vehicle Dimensions Right

The ferry fare for a motorhome is based on its length, and for taller vehicles, also its height. Operators work with fixed length bands, and just a few centimetres over a threshold can push you into the next price tier.

On Board

During the crossing the car decks are closed, so you won't be able to get to your motorhome. Take everything you'll need for the journey with you onto the passenger decks beforehand: travel documents, valuables, medication, and on the overnight ferries, wash things and a change of clothes. Turn off any gas cylinders before the crossing and follow the operator's instructions on this.

Motorhome FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions and answers about travelling to Norway by ferry with a motorhome

Which ferries to Norway take motorhomes?+

Every Norway route is served by car ferries and takes motorhomes. The direct option is the overnight ferry Kiel to Oslo run by Color Line, whose ships carry up to 750 vehicles. From Denmark, Hirtshals is the hub: the fast day ferry Hirtshals to Larvik, and Hirtshals to Kristiansand, both run by Color Line and Fjord Line, plus the overnight ferry Hirtshals to Bergen.

How is the motorhome fare calculated?+

The price depends on the vehicle's length and, for taller motorhomes, also its height. Operators charge in length bands, so even a few centimetres over a threshold can push you into the next, more expensive tier.

Measure your motorhome precisely before booking - including bike racks, roof boxes and tow bars. On the Hirtshals to Larvik route, for example, there is a discounted camper fare up to 5 metres in length and 2.55 metres in height, with longer or taller vehicles bookable for a surcharge.

Do I need to book a cabin with a motorhome?+

Yes, on the overnight ferries Kiel to Oslo and Hirtshals to Bergen, where a cabin is included in the booking. Staying overnight in your own motorhome on the car deck isn't possible, since the decks are closed for safety reasons during the crossing. On the short day crossings from Hirtshals you don't need a cabin.

Can I bring my pet in the motorhome?+

If a dog or cat is travelling with you, Norway applies stricter entry rules as a non-EU country - check the current pet import requirements before you travel. During the crossing, your pet doesn't stay alone in the motorhome on the closed car deck, but travels in a pet cabin or the on-board kennel.
